Apr 16, 2020 Setting your Mac to open apps from unidentified developers. If you want your Mac to allow apps from unidentified developers, you’ll have to follow a few additional steps. Firstly, try to open the unrecognized application. You’ll see a notification that it can’t be opened. Then, follow the instructions: Open System Preferences. Navigate to System Preferences by either searching for it in spotlight or clicking on the apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your Mac and selecting System Preferences. Once in System Preferences, click on Privacy & Security. On the General tab you will see a section toward the bottom called Allow applications downloaded from. In Mac OS X Mountain Lion and later versions, the user has an option if they want to install apps from unidentified developer. This is good because there are many unidentified applications that you can download online and you know it is safe even if it is not caming from Mac App Store. MacOS is a sophisticated operating system with a high level of security. By default, it does not allow you to install applications from unidentified developers. If you are trying to launch an application, which is not installed from App Store and the developer of the application is unidentified, then you may get an alert saying “[App name] can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”. For doing this you have to alter security settings in your Mac OS X, which is not a good idea as it will make your Mac less secure.
